It’s true, this is a criticism I have of all the “platforms”, and this development is just a further logical extension that thing I don’t like, the potentially and actually agenda-driven manipulation and suppression of information. The ideal would be comprehensiveness plus absolute, reliable neutrality, with value judgements rendered by the user. We are very far from that with the “services” which are increasingly manipulative and restrictive. And it’s only going to get worse. Basically all the things I dislike about Facebook apply, so it seems now, to Spotify as well. (And of course, they’ve been doing some version of it all along: a helpful algorithm can be a manipulative, malevolent one at the same time.) But applying this sort of thing to art is something I find disturbing per se.
