The Dr Frank Weakly Reader for 4.09.2021, incl.

Hello friends, and welcome to another Dr Frank Weakly Reader, that thing I do where I attempt to index my own internet for future findability since, as we all know, though few care: it ain’t gonna index itself.

I slacked off and skipped last week so this is two weeks’ worth… read along if you like.

And now, without further ado (as I’ve got very little ado to my name at the moment) on we hurtle into the weak that was…

FRONT BURNER

— RAD-18–1: sort of a “tease” I guess you’d say, of the next Sounds Radical release. LP. Test pressing. You’re gonna like the way it sounds.

Really excellent mastering from Justin Perkins and cutting from Well Made Music. It would be less of a tease if I typed much more, but all will be revealed soon enough.

MTX FOR FUN AND PROFIT

— The Time Bomb Tom Rock N Roll Hall of Fame: an honor just to be nominated.

— "The only two bands in the world that matter…”: a poster from the Lookout Freakout Euro Tour 2001, featuring the Queers and MTX.

I don’t know exactly how that wound up on the poster, but it’s something Joe used to say from the stage all the time in those days so that’s the source.

— All my plans for world domination were premature: a reprise of “What Went Wrong” from Southampton UK 1992 in lieu of a new Song for Odin post for last week:

“Minor secrets” here.

DR FRANK IS YOUR FAVORITE COLOR

— Zoomout III: it happened, and was a good time. Thanks for coming, those that did. There were shirts.

Here I am practicing (or rather pausing to take a photo while practicing, as one does every three seconds in the narcissistic age.) And here’s my pre-show… “still” I guess you’d call it. (Inset, left.)

You know that line that goes “I live in a little hole…”? Same hole, and I still live in it.

For the record, my set list over the three shows was: Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba / Swiss Army Girlfriend / I’d Do Anything for You / She All Right / Even Hitler Had a Girlfriend / Last Time I Listened to You / Swallow Everything / The History of the Concept of the Soul / Tomorrow Is a Harsh Mistress / Thank You for Not Being One of Them / Here She Comes / Book of Revelation / Lawnmower of Love / I Wrote a Book about Rock and Roll / You’re the Only One / Semi-OK.

Pretty solid. “Book of Revelation” was the hardest, and surprisingly viable as an acoustic song, as was “Tomorrow Is a Harsh Mistress.” Might do those again some time.

— Dashiell Hammett, Agatha Christie, Judy Blume, Van Halen: in lieu of a Weakly Reader last week, we reprised this essay on brown M&Ms, silent editing, and bowdlerization. First Editions, now more than ever.

— LK 222, a/k/a Show Business Is My Life: Mark Murphy’s got ’em all, including this.

— Once upon a time Theo asked me to play a “Movember” benefit deep in the bowels of tech and I said alright. Pic.

— Destination consummation: Song for Odin for week one was me doing “Population: Us” at 1234Go! Records in Oakland, November 2012:

“Minor secrets” here. Songs for Odin playlist here.

We skipped week 2 (last week) and instead reprised “What Went Wrong” (above) and “Rock and Roll Love Letter” live at the Troubadour, 2015:

(I lost track of the original “minor secrets” post because of an incorrect link so I re-posted here, for the record.)

— …and:

— and finally, Bill S. Preston, wearing and MTX shirt on the cover of an issue of Bill and Ted’s Excellent Comic by the great Evan Dorkin. He used to put a whole lot of those sort of references, though this is the only MTX one I know of. Anyway, it comes up from time to time, and this time was no exception.

OTHER PEOPLE’S MUSIC

— Good morning world: “official video” for Jethro Tull’s “Aqualung” animated by Sam Chegini. Everything new is old again, and vice and/or versa.

— …and:

PICTURE BOOK

— Roman calendar: John 12: 10–36; Palm Sunday (by Lorenzetti); Holy Monday, John 12: 1–9, by Jacopo and Francesco Bosanno; Holy Tuesday, Judas kiss, by Giotto; Spy Wednesday; Maundy Thursday, art by Fra Angelico; Arma Christi, for Good Friday; Holy Saturday — the Harrowing of Hell; The Morning of the Resurrection by Edward Coley Burne-Jones; the road to Emmaus, illuminated; Saint Brychan of Brycheiniog, with wife Gwladys and four of his sixty-three saint sons, in stained glass; Easter Wednesday, the second miracle of the draught of fishes, painted by Tissot; Christ the Gardener, noli me tangere, Mary Magdelene, John 20: 11–18, illuminated; Saint Casilda and the miracle of the roses (Velázquez)…

— Behold: lady with an axe; lady behind blue curtain (McGinnis); lady on bed with cocktail; drinks of the Zodiac; WOW; Sin in Space; Spike Jones, June Wilkinson, and some suggestive maracas; get away, you demons!; coming up for air (from Martin Briley’s album cover / video for One Night with a Stranger); lady with a blue egg; an Easter parade, illuminated; a girl Gulliver tied down by Trolls; she goes to too many parties — Jean Nieto, 1962; a dramatic Thorazine ad; the world is outgrooving itself; the machine that fell in love

— …and finally:

Herbert James Draper — Ulysses and the Sirens

IN THE NEWS

FIN

And that’ll about wrap it up for this double issue of the Dr Frank Weakly Reader. But for those who’ve made it this far down the page, here’s a couple of gals picking some apples:

See you next week, perhaps.
