Butterflies Are Free
The Dr Frank Weakly Reader for 8.28.2020
Well, friends, it’s another Dr Frank Weakly Reader, that thing I do where I try to index my own “content” so I can find it later, and so you can find it, too, should you ever wish to. Expanded, annotated, and illustrated as best I can. I do it mainly for myself, but feel free to read along and look at the pictures if you like. It’s free.
And now…
FRONT BURNER
— …and the Women Who Love Them in the flesh: still on the front burner, still hot, still beautiful, and now spinning. It may be admired and acquired here. Listen on YouTube here.
I got it in the mail this week just like everyone else, and boy it is nice. If you can’t tell from the pic at the head, Chris Appelgren adapted the original art so that the cover is die-cut and the red bits show from the inner sleeve through the holes. And the 180 gram grey metallic vinyl is gorgeous. And it sounds amazing. Swell job all around.
Records are great.
As I said, the second pressing (150 gram, same color) is still available but only just and we’re already moving on to other colors so stay tuned for that.
— It ain’t real till it’s on discogs: and here it is.
— Also, Mtx forever: still a thing.
MTX FOR THE MASSES
— Diego, my Argentine buddy, sporting a rather uncommon Yesterday Rules T-shirt. We made these for the Yesterday Rules tour in 2004 and only did the one tour and stopped for a decade so they didn’t get out there much. We had a few left over and sold them at our show with Screeching Weasel in San Francisco in 2015.
It’s a great design, derived from the album artwork. Judging from FB comments, it was forgotten by time to such a degree that even Chris Appelgren, who designed it, was unaware of having done so. That’s rare.
— and, speaking of shirts:
“I got too fat for my Mr T Experience shirt, so I gave it to my friend and bought a new, bigger one from Sounds Rad…” Seen on twitter:
You can do the same, if you wish.
— Song for Odin went fishin’: that is, it took the week off… it’ll be back next week most likely. In the interim, here’s the post that started it off back in November of 2017, in simpler times (when the “minor secrets” were only a few sentences):
Songs for Odin playlist is here.
DR FRANK SAYS…
— The Foreigner of my generation: according to this meme type thing, courtesy of Aaron Stingray. Hey, I’ll take it.
— Revenge Is Sweet, and so Are Powdered Sugar Snack Cannons: this tale of the Go-Nuts and their “snack cannon” at the Lookout tenth anniversary show popped up as a FB “memory” — still good enough to share, I reckoned, and share it I did.
— Walter Lure died: I posted a couple of RIP pics (one, and another) and revisited my essay on my one brush with Johnny Thunders (which encompasses a brush with Walter Lure as well.) He was part of the tableau vivant — click the link to find out what that means.
— The hand, the shirt, the sweater, guitar (not shown)… stuff I still have from 1997.
— This is a podcast about a girl: talking about re-issue issues and …and the Women Who Love Them on the Car Con Carne podcast:

IN THE NEWS

And that’ll wrap it up for this here edition of the Dr Frank Weakly Reader. But for those who’ve made it this far down the page, here’s more of Butterflies Are Free:
See you next week I guess.
